Benjamin Lee Whorf is most famous for his contributions to linguistic relativity, his name forming the latter half of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, one of the most iconic (and divisive) theories in linguistics. Given he’s named in such a significant theory, it would stand to reason that he be a well-established lifelong linguist – but reason would prove incorrect in this case.
Whorf was an insurance salesman for almost all of his professional life, only taking the opportunity to work in an official academic capacity at Yale in 1938, three years before his passing in 1941 at the early age of 44 – the case number I chose being the date of his passing. He pursued linguistic research and publication almost entirely as a passion project alongside his work, first publishing in 1928. The progression he enabled linguistically despite his unrelated work makes his theorizing all the more impressive, no matter how woefully disproven his theories may be. Both his critics and defenders describe his works as difficult to understand and convoluted, but his underlying reasoning is very much worthy of further exploration.
The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis – a precursor to modern linguistic relativism – was formulated as a combination of ideas of Whorf and his mentor at Yale, Edward Sapir. The theory posited the idea that the language that we use sets boundaries on the thoughts that we have, and in turn the way that we experience reality – if something can’t be conceptualized in a person’s language, then it won’t be conceptualized in their thoughts, and thus will be experienced in a way that is compatible with a person’s language.
Whorf’s most famous example is the concept of time in the Hopi language. He argued that Hopi language treats time as a single continuous process, instead of quantifiable countable instances like most standard European languages. Countable instances would include things like “three days” or “five years” – nouns to describe units of passing time – a concept not applicable for the Hopi language, affecting how Hopi people understood and conceptualized time, going so far as to explain certain behaviors in the wider Hopi tribe. Hopi people understood the future fundamentally differently, conceptualizing future events as already happening, and that’s why their language is tenseless – a reflection of how they viewed time.
Sadly, this example has been very thoroughly debunked. The Hopi language does mark for tense, and the “fact” that it doesn’t was assumed due to a single account’s inaccurate analysis of the language. “The Hopi language doesn’t have a sense of time” remains an urban myth to this day from this analysis, but is non-reflective of the very real and existing system of Hopi tense marking. Another researcher, Ekkehart Malotki spent years doing proper immersive fieldwork with Hopi communities and published a 677-page book in 1983 demonstrating the language being full of tense marking and linguistic metaphors, much more thorough than Whorf forming this example from a single meeting with a consultant in New York.
Perhaps a better example would be one that Whorf encountered in his workplace as a fire prevention engineer in a fire insurance firm, which the opening of this piece was referencing. Whorf observed a chemical plant with a room used for full gasoline barrels and another room used for empty ones. He noticed the workers at the plant would never smoke in the room with the full barrels, but would routinely smoke in the room with the empty barrels – despite this being possibly much more dangerous, due to flammable gasoline vapors still in the barrels. He concluded that the descriptor of the barrels as “empty” led the workers to unconsciously consider the barrels harmless, despite likely being consciously aware of the risks they posed.
Another is an issue with color discrimination: the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis would posit that a person cannot observe colors that aren’t named in their language. If your language does not have a label for a color, you literally cannot perceive it. This is a fascinating one because it’s true that some languages have terms for less colors than others – for example, Russian distinguishes between light and dark blue as separate in the same way as English does for light and dark red (pink and red, respectively). Still this was also falsified with studies on language like the Pirahã language, in which speakers are able to perceive colors that are unlabeled in their language and describe them. Instead, these speakers just categorize the colors differently – a distinction I’ll return to.
The theory itself is plausible – that is, until one considers the ramifications of it were it to apply. For example, translation and cross-language communication would be impossible. If a person outright can’t conceptualize things not in their language, then how would translation be possible between languages with different conceptual models? Successful translation would be outright impossible because one would be trying to render thoughts that outright cannot exist in a target language, and cannot be understood either. Even intuitively, one can say translation is possible – admittedly often imperfectly, but still possible – and so one must conclude conceptual content in language is held somewhere outside of the linguistic packaging.
A famous critic of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis – Steven Pinker – responds to the theory by arguing for a pre-linguistic “mentalese” that thoughts are in, and that language is a communicatory layer atop mentalese. He uses this to explain things like why a person can struggle to think of words, why infants develop conceptual understanding before linguistic ability, and why many describe creative and mathematical thinking as non-verbal or non-linguistic. Pinker’s line of argument isn’t without its own set of issues, but that’s a story for another time (or perhaps another article). Pinker may have successfully responded to the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, but it seems he was overcompensating for something, overreaching with his claims – a theme not unique to Pinker, as we’ll soon discover.
While it’s clear that the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis can’t apply – at least in the form that Whorf presented – it is true that language has effects on the way that people understand and conceptualize the world. It might not create boundaries around experience (the strong version of the hypothesis), but that’s not to say it doesn’t have any effect on experience. There’s a weak version of the hypothesis – often just referred to as weak linguistic relativity – that has been demonstrated to apply – but has been described as boring, dull, and unexciting, because it doesn’t hold quite as much explanatory and experiential power as “language defines the entirety of subjective human experience”.
The weak form of the hypothesis is shown to apply with a few studies and examples, one of which I already touched on. The Russian language distinguishes between light and dark blue as separate colors, and this makes Russian speakers much faster at distinguishing between the two shades than English speakers. It’s not as if the English speakers can’t experience the distinction, but they absolutely are affected in their ability to rapidly experience and distinguish the two, as a result of their linguistic framework – weak linguistic relativity in action.
A different example can be found with languages like Guugu Yimithirr – where speakers use cardinal directions (north/south/east/west) at all times, instead of also incorporating relative directions (left/right). Such speakers develop extraordinary spatial abilities – at least relative to non-speakers – due to needing to be constantly aware of where north is.
Language may not set the boundaries on thought, imprisoning it, but it absolutely subtly tilts thought, adding a subtle but meaningful and observable dimension to experience – whether that be related to colors and tones, directions, or even how objects in the world are perceived due to their grammatical gender. It’s this exact kind of subtle shift that explains what Whorf was observing in the room of empty barrels – he just went a little too far with the power he gave to the underlying phenomenon for the smoking habits of the workers.
In a way, Whorf stands just like the empty barrels in his observations: dismissed (as his claims should be) but with vapors of something very real and very impactful.
